New Delhi, July 23: Government today ruled out in the Rajya Sabha any proposal to impart mandatory military training to the youth.

"At present, there is no such proposal under
consideration," Defence Minister George Fernandes said in a
written reply to a question if there was any effort to unify
and coordinate the activities of NCC, Bharat Scouts and
Guides, Home Guard and territorial army for national defence.
Replying to supplementaries during Question Hour, Minister of State for Defence Chamanlal Gupta said it was not possible to make military training compulsory to youth at present. "India is a democratic country and the government cannot compel the youth to take a particular profession," he said. Bureau Report
