San Diego, Feb 21: Lindows.com Inc on Thursday said that it was selling its first notebook computer, with a retail price of $799, or half the cost of similarly equipped notebook computers from Apple, IBM and Toshiba that run more conventional software. Lindows offers computers running a desktop version of the Linux software system that competes with Microsoft's Windows and Apple's own operating system software. The software alternative offers many of the standard features of the other systems at far lower prices.

The company, which already offers a $199 desktop computer running Linux software, introduced its 2.9 pound Lindows Mobile PC computer running a 933 megahertz microprocessor from Taiwan's VIA Technologies, a small rival of computer chip giant Intel.

"Until now, laptop computers have been either too expensive or too heavy to be useful for most consumers," Michael Robertson, CEO of Lindows.com, said in a statement.

The company contrasted its Lindows Mobile PC to an Apple iBook notebook computer priced at $1,799 with a 867 megahertz processor. The Apple iNote is nearly twice the weight but also boasts a hard disk double the size of the Lindows machine.
