Guwahati, Apr 20: The prime accused in the mortar attacks at Dispur and Ambari area of the city, ULFA ultra Dwipamani Kalita, today formally surrendered to the Assam Director General of Police Hare Krishna Deka. Announcing this at a press conference here, Deka said Kalita, who joined the outfit in 1998, was involved in several operations by the outfit. With this the case involving the two attacks in the city that claimed three lives and injured 19 has been solved, police said. Kalita, alias Sima Biswas alias Moina alias Sima Sonowal belonging to Jabjabkuchi village of Nalbari district deposited one AK-56 rifle and three RPG cells before the DGP.
The woman ULFA cadre, regarded as one of the top militant in the outfit, undertook training of arms and explosives in the "Enigma B Group" in 1998 and was specially selected and sent to Bangladesh in 2001 for training in mortar firing, Deka said.

The police chief said Kalita was an exceptionally brilliant brain who passed her school examination in 1996 in the first division and graduated in Advanced Maths from Nalbari College.

Deka said her mentors were top ULFA leaders Dristi Rajkhowa, Raju Barua and "commander-in-chief" Paresh Barua.

In October last year, the ULFA fired mortar bombs in the Dispur capital complex in the high security area housing the offices of chief minister and other ministers in which two cars were damaged and the splinter caused damage to a garage.

On December last, the ULFA fired five mortar bombs in three areas simultaneously in the busy Ambari area of the city in which 21 people were injured of which three later succumbed to their injuries.

"The psychological tactics adopted by the police had resulted in the prime catch of Kalita", IGP (Special Branch) Khagen Sarmah later told reporters.

He revealed that the police had also identified Pronoy Roy as an accused in two other mortar attacks near the city and a search was on to nab him.

In February last the ULFA fired mortars at an Indian Airforce base near the Borjhar airport here while on April 3 last the outfit aimed the LPG bottling plant by mortar at Mirza which missed the target.
