Mumbai, June 11: Suburban rail commuters in Mumbai will pay extra from July one with the Railways deciding to impose a surcharge on season and single tickets of all classes to fund the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) that is expected to garner Rs 95 crore annually. Minister of State for Railways Bandaru Dattatreya told reporters here that a surcharge of Re one would be imposed on a second class card ticket and Rs two on a first class card ticket.

A surcharge of Rs 10 would be imposed on second class and monthly season pass and Rs 30 on a quarterly pass. A surcharge of Rs 15 would be imposed on a first class pass for the first 50 kms.

However, no surcharge would be imposed for the first five km of a journey, he said.

The surcharge was expected to generate an estimated revenue of Rs 95 crore annually. Fifty percent of the revenue generated would go to the state government and the rest to the Railways, the minister said.

The Railway component of the MUTC project was around Rs 3500 crore.

A notification on the surcharge would be issued soon.
