New Delhi, Oct 10: Concerned over the increasing incidents of rape in the national capital, the National Commission for Women (NCW) will soon call a meeting of top government and police officials to discuss ways and means to make the metropolis a safer place for women.
"We have decided to meet various secretaries of Delhi government including that of health and education departments and senior police officials to discuss the recent spurt in the number of rape cases in the capital,” NCW chairperson Poornima Advani told reporters here today.
Though the exact date for the meeting was yet to be fixed, "we will be meeting before Diwali", Advani said at an informal meeting with media persons and added "these matters cannot be postponed any longer".
Advani said she expected some "strong policy decisions" to emerge from the meeting.
"Every time legislative amendments are not required to address a problem, you cannot keep on amending rape laws. What is needed is greater security", she said.
When asked about police explanation that in most cases the rapists were known to the victim and they were helpless to intervene in such cases, Advani said, "they cannot offer such defences all the time. Security for women, students etc has to be increased".
