New Delhi, Nov 14: The Unesco has lauded India's
efforts for preservation of its cultural heritage and
expressed satisfaction over the recent initiatives taken to
protect the environment of the Taj.
This was conveyed by Director-General of Unesco Koichiro
Matsuura when he called on union Minister for Tourism and
Culture Jagmohan here.
Matsuura congratulated Jagmohan on the declaration of the country's oral tradition of Vedic chanting as "intangible heritage of humanity" by the Unesco recently.
He said among the 80 entries received from world over, the chanting of Vedas was considered an outstanding example of heritage and form of cultural expression.
The Unesco declaration would bring international recognition to the excellence of the Vedic chanting tradition of India, which has survived for centuries encoding the wisdom contained in the Vedas, an official release here quoted the Unesco DG as saying.
Jagmohan apprised Matsuura of the recent initiatives of the Indian government to protect the cultural heritage, including setting up of a national mission for conservation of intangible heritage and monuments.
The minister suggested that more than one heritage site could be considered in a year for world heritage recognition by Unesco, the release said.
