Rajshahi (Bangladesh), Oct 6: Authorities of Rajshahi Central jail here have taken up a unique programme to correct detained drug addicts through various realistic and effective measures. According to the jail sources, regular academic and vocational training classes have been introduced for about 200 addicts so that they could attain skills which will enable them to earn their living after their jail-term was over. Hired teachers, high officials and educated prisoners are engaged to teach under this programme, launched with the initiative of the jail authorities. The addicts are being made aware of the bad effects of drugs and how they could abstain from addiction. Treatment facilities are also being provided at the jail hospital, sources said.
According to official sources a number of addicts go back to lead a normal life after they were released from the jail.
Senior Jail Superintendent Fazlul Haque told reporters that the programme had been launched because of increasing number of drug addicts in the jail.
