Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee reaffirmed his refusal to talk to Gen Parvez until Pakistan gives up ‘cross-border terrorism’. He was speaking at the Asia Society in New York on Thursday.
Pakistan, he said, has continuously promoted terrorism in different parts of India. From hijacking to slaughter of men, women and children, Pakistan has always disrupted peace in India, Vajpayee added. Denouncing the declartion of ‘jehad’ by guerrilla groups in Kashmir, he said: “This is nothing but an attempt by those who have adopted cross-border terrorism as an instrument of state policy to disown responsibility for their crimes.” Vajpayee, who is on a 13-day visit to the US, will be flying to Washington on Sept 13 where he will hold bilateral talks with President Bill Clinton and will also address the US Congress. His visit, first by an Indian prime minister in six years, assumes political significance as it is widely expected to forge closer bilateral economic ties between the two countries.
