New Delhi, Aug 11: Alarmed over the growing incidents of female foeticide in the country, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee tonight described it as a "blot" on the society and called for concerted efforts to end this evil practice. "More than 15 lakh cases of female foeticide have taken place in the last ten years. This is a blot on our society. Even in some economically advanced states, the number of female population is decreasing as compared to the male population. This is a warning bell,” he said.
Speaking at a function to give away the fifth Dr Durgabai Deshmukh award to Udaipur-based NGO Mahila Mandal, Vajpayee wanted the Central Social Welfare Board to play a more active role in countering this menace and greater coordination between the government and the NGOs in the matter.
Detailing the magnitude of the problem in the social welfare field, he underlined the need of "public-private partnership" to take up the gigantic task in view of the fact that government efforts alone would not be able to carry out the welfare of the weaker sections. There have been some deficiencies in the working of the NGOs, he said.
"There were instances where the NGOs are run only to get funds from the government and the motto of such institutions was not to help others but to help themselves," he told the gathering which included Human Resource Development Minister Murli Manohar Joshi, Planning Commission Deputy Chairman K C Pant among others.
