Sept 15: Former Australian national swim coach Don Talbot says swimming star Ian Thorpe may live to regret splitting with long-time coach Doug Frost.

The 19-year-old phenomenon announced on Thursday that he was switching to a relatively unproven coach in Frost's assistant, Tracey Menzies. But Talbot says the decision may have been taken in haste when Thorpe was stressed and tired from two major meets in a row - the Commonwealth Games and the Pan Pacific Championships.
Talbot said: "It's not a good time to make major decisions. That's a life-influencing decision.
"You make decisions when you're recovered...not when you're really down and out. "He's just come off some major meets where he didn't swim like he wanted to and so he's making the decision: 'Well, I'm going to go and change coaches'." Thorpe won six gold medals at the Manchester Commonwealth Games and added five at the Pan Pacific Championships in Japan.
But the world 200m, 400m and 800m freestyle record holder revealed his passion for the sport has waned of late.
"It's a big call and maybe he doesn't know what he's doing," Talbot said.
"Maybe he hasn't thought of all of the full ramifications."
