Dhaka, July 05: Refusing to accept an apology by a newspaper in Bangladesh that wrongly described Prime Minister Khaleda Zia as the main opposition leader in an article three months ago, the Bangladesh government today ordered its closure.
"The newspaper could not prove that there was no political motive in the wrong description of the leader," Sadar Uddin Ahmed, the government official who cancelled the newspaper's permit said. The editor of the penalised Bangla language daily, 'Dainik Uttarbanga Barta', Hanif Ali Sheikh said that the government refused to accept an apology and the explanation that it was a computer error.
He said that he would challenge the decision in court.
The article on Bangladesh's Independence Day anniversary celebrations described Zia as the main opposition leader. It described opposition leader, Sheikh Hasina, as the prime minister. Bureau Report
