New Delhi, Oct 22: In an effort to apprise the
voters about the background of their candidates, the Election
Commission will display on its website the affidavits filed by
the nominees citing their background.
The Commission would post the affidavits after the last
date of nominations, EC sources said.
Posting the affidavits on the website would help various NGOs and others to do an analysis, the sources said adding that returning officers would make affidavits available to other candidates and the media.
While filing of affidavit has been made mandatory for the first time in five states going to polls, providing any wrong or obsolete information would be challenged in the court after the election process.
The Commission is also proposing to start an exercise to identify sensitive constituencies in Delhi and the reasons for the sensitivity, the sources said.
Observing that the presence of a large number of dummy candidates in the field could be one of the reasons for the sensitivity of a constituency, the sources that one way to prune dummy candidates would be to increase the deposit money substantially to Rs 10,000 for an assembly seat and Rs 20,000 for a Lok Sabha seat as against Rs 5,000 and Rs 10,000 respectively.
