A Bangkok district court, on Tuesday, fined underworld don Chhota Rajan 500 baht (12 dollars) for providing false information to Thai immigration officials and granted him freedom, court officials said. Rajan, alias Vijay Kadam, who was severely wounded in a gangland-style shootout on September 15, appeared in court on a hospital bed. He thanked the court for his freedom, and said he had ''faith in Thailand's judicial system.'' After the judgement, Rajan was immediately driven to Bangkok's immigration department this afternoon to see if they would take further measures to block his departure from Thailand. Thai immigration police have tried to prevent Rajan from leaving the country on the claim that they want to deport him to India, where he allegedly faces several charges including murder. Rajan has said he wishes to leave Thailand for a ''third country'' immediately, as he fears for his life in Bangkok. Sirichai Tiyathichetkul, Rajan's Thai lawyer, said police now had no legal grounds for keeping the suspected mafia boss in the country. ''This is unfair treatment of a foreigner,'' said Sirichai. ''Immigration police are using regulations, not laws, to keep Rajan here.” Sirichai denied that India has approached Thai authorities to deport Rajan home. Indian embassy officials in Bangkok refused to comment. Bureau Report
