A lone gunman shot and killed a prominent Shiite Muslim leader in northwest Pakistan on Thursday, police said.
"Anwar Ali Akhundzada, central secretary general of Tehrik-e-Jafria Pakistan, was shot outside his home in Peshawa , the capital of Pakistan's rugged northwest frontier province," they said.
No one has claimed responsibility for the shooting, but Akhundzada's group has often clashed with members of militant Sunni muslim organizations, particularly the Sipuh-e-Sahaba or guardians of the friends of the prophet.
A Tehrik-e-Jafria spokesman in the federal capital of Islamabad, Ghulam Haider Haidri, said that it was too early to fix blame, but he called for a swift police investigation. Bureau Report
