Director: Hansal Mehta Cast: Manoj Bajpai, Tabu, Saurabh Shukla Reality bites. It surely does. And Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar shows that. Away from the escapist cinema, the film is firmly rooted in reality and tells the story of one Ramsaran Pandey (Manoj Bajpai) who comes from the small town of Jaunpur to Mumbai in search of money and riches. He is principled and an honest man and gets a job as a mechanic. Tabu plays the role of a journalist, Kamya, who takes fancy for this honest man and starts writing about him, so much so that Mahesh Bhatt (playing himself) takes note and wants to make a film on Pandey.
Pandey falls in love with Kamya. When Kamya realises it, she brushes him aside, which makes Pandey believe that she is doing this because he is poor. The net result of Pandey`s experiences is that he is thrust towards the life of crime and falls deeper and deeper into it. Suarabh Shukla plays Ramsaran`s friend Gaitonde, a small-time marriage photographer. He has also penned the script of the film. The first half of the film moves at its own pace and drags at times. However, the action picks up in the second half. But what the film stands out is for the realistic portrayal of life in Mumbai whether it has to do with scenes of 10 friends living in one room or the sequences capturing the underground.
Manoj Bajpai, who seems to have made a career out of portraying real-life characters, excels in the role of Pandey. From being a small-time guy in a big city to his one-sided love with Tabu and being caught in the vortex of underworld, his expressions are superb. Tabu lives up to her role. The film however has little scope for music, which makes it dry at times. But Hansal Mehta has done a good job as a director. Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar is not a routine Bollywood film and tries to walk between being an art and a commercial film. It is good cinema. And good cinema does not necessarily mean entertaining cinema, especially if you are going out with your family.
