India on Thursday concluded its biggest ever defence deal worth more than three billion dollars with Russia under which it will purchase 310 T-90 S tanks, go into production of 150 SU-30 MKI fighter planes and acquire the aircraft carrier Admiral Gorshkov.

The agreements signed by Defence Minister George Fernandes and Russian Deputy Prime Minister Ilya Klebanov sees India and Russia shifting away from their buyer-seller relationship to one of joint production, a new era of defence cooperation.

Besides the long-pending agreements on the T-90 battle tanks, Sukhois and Admiral Gorshkov, Mr Fernandes and Mr Klebanov also inked an agreement on the setting up of an inter-governmental commission on military-technical cooperation.
