Bangladesh premier Sheikh Hasina has accused country's opposition parties of hatching a conspiracy to foil democracy in the country and convert Bangladesh into a vassal state of Pakistan. Refuting allegations of a pro-India bias by her Awami League Party in the wake of her call to all those with pro-Pakistani leanings to leave Bangladesh and settle in Pakistan, she said on Friday that anti-liberation forces had joined hands to make Bangladesh a vassal state of Pakistan.
After failing to dislodge the government, these forces were now conspiring against the democratic process and elections, Hasina told her partymen in Dhaka. She said the opposition alliance, which groups begun Khaleda Zia's Bangladesh National Party (BNP), the Jatiya Party of former military ruler HM Ershad and two Islamic groups, was conspiring to foil democracy by fomenting anarchy and called upon people to remain vigilant against such moves.
The defeated forces of 1971 war of liberation who conspired against the nationhood of Bangladesh had come together to disrupt democracy and sabotage the coming polls, she said urging people to prepare for the general elections, though her government's tenure expires on July 13 next year. People need to keep themselves aware of conspiracies against the elections and the process of democracy, she said.
“But I believe that the next elections will be held freely and fairly,” she added.
