Indian citizens travelling to Nepal by air would have to carry a valid passport or election identification card from Oct 1 “They had also been advised not to carry Indian currency of Rs 500 denomination, prohibited in Nepal,” a Home Ministry spokesman said.
Authorities of the Indian Airlines, which has warned passengers against carrying of such notes, said that the Nepalese revenue investigation authorities had declared that Rs 500 notes were liable to be seized and the defaulters arrested and imprisoned up to three years. The airline has also asked its offices issuing tickets to Kathmandu to inform passengers not to carry such notes.
The steps were taken after talks between India and Nepal on improving security for air travellers, following the hijack of the Indian Airlines flight IC-814 on Dec 24 last. Bureau Report
