A sodium cyanide spill is threatening to contaminate the water supplies to tens of millions of people in north-west china - and also the reservoir from which top Chinese leaders draw supplies, the Hong Kong media reported on Wednesday.
A truck carrying 5.2 tonnes of the toxic chemical plunged into the Wuguan river, in Danfeng county, Shaanxi province, about 950 km south-west of Beijing on Friday, the official Chinese media broke the news on Tuesday, five days after the accident.
“No human casualties have been reported from the leak,” China daily reported on Wednesday while emphasising that contamination was under control within 14 km along the river after local authorities along with the army built embankments to contain the toxic chemicals. Bureau Report
