WATCH: Atletico Madrid striker Fernando Torres suffers sickening head injury
The former Liverpool and Chelsea player crashed heavily to the turf, with his head slamming into the ground.
New Delhi: Atletico Madrid striker Fernando Torres was rushed to hospital after suffering a head injury during their 1-1 draw against Deportivo La Coruna in a La Liga match at the Riazor early Friday.
The unfortunate incident took place in the 85th minute of the match when the 32-year-old was hit from behind by Depor substitute Alex Bergantinos in a clash of heads.
The former Liverpool and Chelsea player crashed heavily to the turf, with his head slamming into the ground. Moments later, concerned players and medical staff rushed to his aide.
Torres seemed to have lost consciousness, and was subsequently taken off the pitch on a stretcher and then transported to a hospital.
But, a CT scan on Torres revealed the the striker suffered no traumatic brain injuries.
"A cranial and cervical CT scan carried out on Fernando Torres has ruled out that the Rojiblanco striker has suffered any alterations or traumatic injuries," Atletico said in a statement.
"Our player, who is stable, conscious and oriented, had to be removed by ambulance after being stabilised according to the usual protocol, before entering the Model Hospital of La Coruna, where he will spend the night in observation," it added.
The hosts made the perfect start when Florin Andone capitalised on a poor goal kick from Jan Oblak to run through and slot past the Slovenian.
Atletico responded after half-time and equalised in stunning fashion 22 minutes from time when Antoine Griezmann thrashed home a shot from fully 30 yards.
