New Delhi: In another alarming surge, India reported over 4.01 lakh (4,01,078) fresh COVID-19 cases and more than four thousand deaths in the last 24 hours.

4,187 people succumbed to the deadly infection, the highest number of fatalities in a single day, as per the Union Health Ministry data on Saturday (May 8). The total caseload surpassed the 2.18-crore mark (2,18,92,676), while the death count climbed to 2,38,270. 


This is the third consecutive day that India has recorded more than four lakh new COVID-19 cases. In the past 16 days, India has been recording over three lakh daily cases. While over 3,000 casualties have been reported for the last 10 days.


On Friday, India reported over 4.14 lakh new COVID-19 cases and 3,915 deaths in the last 24 hours. 


Meanwhile, a total of 3,18,609 people have been discharged in the last 24 hours, while 1,79,30,960 people have recovered so far. The active cases have mounted to 37,23,446. 


As per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 30,04,10,043 samples were tested till Friday (May 7), out of which 18,08,344 samples were tested on Friday.


Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Delhi and Kerala are among the top ten states accounting for 71.81 per cent of new COVID-19 cases, the Union Health Ministry data revealed.
