New Delhi: A massive earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter Scale jolted Assam, India on Wednesday (April 28) morning. As per the information available at the moment, the earthquake originated in Assam and tremors were felt across Assam, North Bengal and other parts of the Northeast.

However, no loss of life or property has been reported as of now.


As per the National Centre of Seismology, the origin of the earthquake is Tezpur of Assam. The According to the seismology centre, the earthquake was centred 43 km west of Tezpur in Assam.


There were three aftershocks following the major earthquake, one around 8:13 am, followed by another at 8:25 and then the third at 8:44. The three aftershocks measured 4.0, 3.6 and 3.6 on the Richter Scale respectively.


Prime Minister Narendra Modi speaks to Assam CM Sonowal over the phone and takes stock of damage due to earthquake. He has assured all support to Assam.



Union Home Minister Amit Shah, while speaking to media, also said, "Have spoken to Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal to assess the condition in different parts of the state after an earthquake. Central govt stands firmly with our sisters and brothers of Assam. Praying for everyone’s safety and well-being."


The quake was at a depth of 10 km (6.21 miles), European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said.


"Just experienced a massive earthquake in Assam. Waiting for details," Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted minutes after the earthquake.

Several individuals are uploading visuals from Assam. One of the such video show walls have collapsed, windows were shattered in some parts due to the earthquake.
