He added, "All these rumours of the Army being called in to handle the situation in Mumbai are false and agenda-driven."

  • Rajasthan records total of 152 cases and 4 deaths till 9 pm. Cumulative positive cases stand at 3,579. Total deaths in the state reach 103.

  • Keeping in mind the capability of the Mumbai Police, if we need, an additional police force will be called from the Central government.   • Clashes erupted between the locals in Shahpur Rajaji Society and Nagorivad Police in Gujarat's Ahmedabad. The incident took place on the coming out of people from their houses during the Ramadan month. The police released teargas and the senior police officers present at the spot trying to control the situation.

  • Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh held a telephone conversation with Minister of Defence, Japan Taro Kono. The two Defence Ministers had discussions on their respective responses against the COVID-19 pandemic. Singh informed Mr Kono Taro on India’s contribution to international efforts against COVID-19 and discussed areas of mutual cooperation in the global fight against the pandemic. They also agreed that India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership provides a good basis for both countries to work together along with other countries in this regard to deal with the post-COVID-19 related challenges. Both ministers also conveyed their commitment to take forward the initiatives of bilateral security cooperation under the framework of the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership.         

  • Jharkhand government prohibits for one year the manufacturing, storage, distribution or sale of pan masala containing magnesium carbonate in the state.

  • Summer vacations shall commence for the students of nursery to classes 9 and 11 from May 16 and the school will reopen on July 1. In case of any change in the schedule of re-opening, as maybe because of govt orders/CBSE guidelines, you will be intimated during the month of June.   • 77 coronavirus COVID-19 positive cases in Arthur Road Jail shifted to Chembur suburb. They have been kept under quarantine in a vacant building in Mahul area of Chembur. Apart from 77 inmates, 26 jail staffers who have also been found positive have been shifted to different places for their treatment.

  • Special Train for Migrants: The Madhya Pradesh government has sought 25 additional trains from the Railways to bring back migrant labourers of the state from other parts of the country, a senior official said on Friday.

  • Russia's Covid-19 cases rise by more than 10,000 for 6th straight day: The number of new coronavirus cases in Russia rose by 10,699 over the past 24 hours, bringing the nationwide tally to 187,859, the coronavirus crisis response centre said on Friday. ( Reuters report)

  • Triupati pilgrims: The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) has prepared a plan for post lockdown worship of Lord Venkateswara for devotees. In an exclusive interview Zee media, TTD chairman YV Subba Reddy informed that whenever state and central government will remove the lockdown and allow pilgrims to visit the temple, the TTD will implement new measures like social distancing, sanitization and install disinfectant tunnels. The TTD chairman added that engineers are already working on this plan.

India is facing the worst wave of coronavirus outbreak as cases spiked sharply over the past few weeks. Positive Covid-19 cases in the country crossed 56,000-mark after the Union Health Ministry data on its website on Thursday; the death toll has also crossed 1,800.

In India, the state of Maharashtra has emerged as the epicentre of coronavirus spread where the number of cases, having crossed the 16,500-mark with more than 600 deaths, witnessed a massive spike recently. 


Meanwhile, in what is being termed as one of India's largest repatriation exercise to date, Indians stranded in different parts of the world due to the existing bans on air travel are being evacuated with Air India and the Union Ministry of External Affairs' joint initiative. The Indian Army is operating quarantine facilities for the citizens who are returning from different countries, as part of the initiative.


India, one of the four worst-affected countries in Asia, is worried about the exponential rise of cases in urban areas and a high fatality rate in states like Maharashtra, Gujarat and West Bengal.


Globally, the situation remains grim as the US remains the worst affected country with over 70,000 deaths. In a first, the country also recorded the death of a detained immigrant who had tested positive for the virus.
