According to DJB, its total gas-based power generation at the three STPs has now gone up to 40,000 KWH per day.

"DJB has started generation of bio-gas power from its 45 MGD sewage treatment plant at Kondli. The plant has started producing 10,000 KWH per day which will increase further in the coming days," the DJB said in its press release.

It said that apart from Kondli STP, the bio-gas based plants have also been commissioned at Okhla and Rithala.

"At Okhla STP, 12,000 KWH and at Rithala STP 20,000 KWH are being generated daily," it said, adding that presently 30 to 35 per cent of the power demand of these three STPs is met from the electricity generated from its bio-gas based plants.

It said they have plans to install bio-gas based power generation in all its STPs wherever technically feasible.

"In the coming days, power generation will start in sewage treatment plants at Pappan Kalan, Nilothi, Yamuna Vihar and Delhi Gate. DJB has set the target to increase the power generation capacity to 70,000 KWH of power per day from its gas based plants by the end of current year. This will save at least Rs 20 crore per year in the power bill of the DJB," it said.

The DJB also said that bio-gas based power generation is environment friendly.
