The 24-hour general strike sponsored by the United Committee Manipur (UCM) against Centre-NSCN (I-M) ceasefire extension today affected normal life across Manipur, official sources said.
Over fifty people were injured when security forces fired and lobbed tear gas shells to disperse thousands of demonstrators protesting against the extension of ceasefire to Manipur in Impahl late last night.
Defying the curfew, thousands of people took to the street in the night shouting slogans against the extension of ceasefire agreement between the union government and the Underground National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Isak-Muivah) on June 14 at Bangkok.
Sources said shops, markets and business establishments remained closed while vehicular traffic came to a halt in the state. Indefinite curfew imposed in two districts of Imphal east and Imphal west was also not relaxed in view of the intensified anti-ceasefire agitation. Attendence in government offices was `almost nil` while several parts of Imphal area wore deserted look while army and para-military forces have stepped up security measures at all vulnerable points, reports said.
Meanwhile, reports from the districts, including hills, said sit-in protests, dharnas and rallies against the ceasefire were reported from several parts of the state. No untoward incident was reported so far.
