In a shocking incident, a nun was shot at and seriously injured by four miscreants on the Ujjain-Dewas road, near Ujjain, police said on Tuesday. The four arrived on two motorcycles and shot at 30-year old Leena Veena in her face from point blank range on Monday, superintendent of police, S L Thousen said. Leena, a Keralite nun of "Aradhana Sadan", run by the sisters of the adoration of blessed sacrament in Ujjain, had gone for shopping along with another nun and was waiting for a helper when the incident took place, he said.
She was first rushed to Ujjain civil hospital and shifted to Choithram hospital on Monday night. Her condition is stated to be stable and she is being operated upon to rectify disfigurement of her jaw, according to medical director of the Choithram Hospital and Research Centre, Dr Ravi Kant. Thousen said that the hunt was on for the culprits and security has been tightened around Christian organisations in the district.
Meanwhile, Bishop of Indore, Dr George Anathel condemned the shooting and demanded a high level inquiry into the incident. "The incident is unfortunate and it seems that the people are not safe on the roads. Police must identify the culprits and their motives", he said. "We are very disturbed over the incident. There was no provocation and the innocent nun was unnecessarily shot at", he said.
Anathel said that Bishop of Bhopal was taking up the matter with Chief Minister Digvijay Singh.
