5.2-magnitude earthquake jolts Kashmir Valley
A moderate intensity earthquake jolted the Kashmir Valley on Saturday although no immediate report of any casualty or damage to property was reported.
Srinagar: A moderate intensity earthquake jolted the Kashmir Valley on Saturday although no immediate report of any casualty or damage to property was reported.
Farooq Ahmad Bhat, senior meteorologist told IANS, "A moderate intensity earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale occurred in Kashmir at 1.34 p.m., on Saturday."
"The epicentre of the tremor was in Jammu and Kashmir region near the India-Pakistan border and the depth of the tremor was 10 km."
"It`s coordinates were latitude 34.4 degrees north and longitude 73.08 degrees east," Bhat added.
Kashmir is situated in an earthquake vulnerable seismological region.
In October 2005, an earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale struck the two parts of divided Kashmir killing over 40,000 people and destroying homes and other property worth billions.
