As per reports in a daily, the organisers were taken by surprise by the speed of the contribution by the community for the event in New York.

The event is being organised by the Indian American Community Foundation. If reports are to be believed then they were able to raise over a million or to be precise $1.6 million within just days.

PM Modi is due to address and meet with the Indian Americans at MSG on September 28.

The Government of India had told the organisers they were not going to pay for the MSG event this time.

Supposedly the initial estimates had put the cost of organising the reception in the range of $400,000 and $700,000.

While some of the organisers contributed their own money to book the venue, later a website was created where contributions could be made, anything from $5 and 10 to $5,000.

Reportedly, more than eighty percent of the money has come from middle class Indian Americans.

Modi is scheduled to leave for the US on September 25.

On his itinerary is a visit to Ground Zero and the 9/11 memorial, visit to the Central Park for the Global Citizen Festival, addressing the UN General Assembly and bilateral meetings with some heads of state.

Modi may also attend a meeting of G-4 countries.

And then on September 29 he will reach Washington DC and have dinner with US President Barack Obama.

On September 30 he will meet Obama for a delegation-level meeting.
