Shillong: Chemical scientist Sri Krishna Srivastava has been appointed the new vice-chancellor of North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) here in Meghalaya, officials said on Monday.

Srivastava`s appointment followed after three students organisations under the banner of Joint Action Committee set September 30 as the deadline to appoint a full-time vice-chancellor.

President Pranab Mukherjee appointed Srivastava, who succeeded officiating vice-chancellor P. Shukla.

Srivastava obtained his Master of Science and PhD degrees from IIT, Kanpur. He joined the department of chemistry, Manipur University, in 1983 and served as a professor since 1995 till his new appointment as the NEHU vice chancellor.

On Monday, the newly appointed vice-chancellor called on Meghalaya Governor V. Shanmunagathan, who is the chief rector of the university.
