Angul: At least nine persons, including two women and a child, were on Monday killed when a coal laden truck rammed into a van near Chainpal square here on the National Highway 149, police said.

Following the incident, seven passengers of the van were killed on the spot while two others succumbed to their injuries at the Angul government hospital, Banrapal Police Station IIC Subhrakant Mallick said.


The coal laden truck was on its way to Banrapal from Talcher when the incident took place, he said.


Irate locals blocked the road and demanded adequate compensation for the victims' families.


They also demanded restriction on plying of heavy carrier vehicles in the day time on the road. "We are trying to identify the deceased persons.


Efforts are on to pacify the irate mob and clear the road," Mallik said.
