Delhi air quality very hazardous: People advised to stay home or wear masks outside

Since past few days, Delhi has been grappling with high levels of pollution. No significant change has been noticed in the level of toxic pollutants in the air since Monday.

New Delhi: Since past few days, Delhi has been grappling with high levels of pollution. According to a report by the World Health Organisation (WHO), the city has been found to have the highest levels of particulate matter, also known as PM 2.5, known to be most harmful to human health.

Well, it seems Delhiites are not in for much relief on Tuesday. According to a report published in The Hindu, no significant change has been noticed in the level of toxic pollutants in the air since Monday.

Delhi Pollution Control Committee's real-time readings showed that suspended particulate matter, PM 2.5 and PM 10, levels were way above the safe limits of 60 and 100 micrograms per cubic metre in multiple areas of the city.

System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR) monitoring stations, located across the city in areas such as Delhi University, Dhirpur, Mathura Road, Pusa road had AQI of PM 2.5 and PM 10 above 300 and 200 respectively, considered 'very poor'.

Delhi, with 8.1 million registered vehicles, has repeatedly beaten Beijing on particulate matter pollution. The city adds over 1,000 new personal vehicles each day on its roads. Also, the rider ship on Delhi buses are constantly decreasing. Growing traffic on city streets is a major cause of air pollution.
