'Air pollution level in Delhi expected to remain high'

Scientists have warned of high air pollution levels in Delhi in the coming days.

New Delhi: As air quality in the national capital deteriorates further, scientists have called for strict emission norms and cleaner fuels to contain air pollution.

As per a report from Economic Times, scientists have warned that air pollution levels in Delhi will remain high as intense smog is expected in the coming days.

According to Gufran Beig, project director at System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR), as of November 24, the levels of particulate matter 2.5 - or fine particles smaller than 2.5 micrometres - over Delhi has touched 229 microgram per cubic metre, up from 145 microgram on the same day last year.

“It is expected that the levels will remain in same range until November 27,” ET quotes Beig as saying.

The worsening air quality can aggravate respiratory problems for asthma and heart patients.

As per a new report by SAFAR, pollution levels in Delhi have been rising since November 17, reaching Diwali levels on November 21, 22 and 23 - which are worse than the same period last year.

The World Health Organisation (WHO), has termed the air in Delhi as one of the worst in terms of quality in the world.
