Kolkata: Trinamool Congress leader and former minister Madan Mitra, accused in the multi-crore rupee Saradha chit fund scam and lodged in a jail, today filed his nomination papers for contesting Assembly poll and declared assets amounting to Rs 80 lakh.

Mitra, who was arrested by CBI in December, 2014, signed his papers in the Alipore jail, where he is lodged, which was submitted before the Election Commission by his representatives in his constituency of Kamarhati in North 24- Parganas district.


According to the self-sworn affidavit, which is part of the nomination form, he has cash in hand of Rs 6,200, jewellery, bank balance and investments totalling about Rs 53 lakh.


Besides this, Mitra also owns two flats in Kolkata whose market value is estimated to be around Rs 35.3 lakh at present.


His networth, therefore, totals about Rs 88 lakh.


In his affidavit the former Transport Minister claims he doesn't own any vehicle but his wife Archana Mitra has two cars including an SUV and an Ambassador.


His wife owns assets totalling over Rs 62 lakh.


Mitra's own income for the financial year 2014-15 was a little over Rs 7 lakh, as stated in the affidavit.
His occupation column says he is into social work and politics.


Besides the Saradha scam, he has declared that he has a number of cases relating to rioting armed with deadly weapons, unlawful assembly, assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharging his duty, pending against him.


The former minister's name had also come up in the Narada sting operation where Mitra was purportedly shown taking money.
