As 2024 comes to a close, it has proven to be an eventful year for India. The nation witnessed key events, from the Lok Sabha elections to the U.S. presidential polls. Lok Sabha Election
One of the biggest events of 2024 in India was the Lok Sabha election, held in seven phases from April 19 to June 1 to elect 543 members to the Lok Sabha. The results were announced on July 4.
State Elections
Apart from the Lok Sabha elections, several assembly elections were also in states including Haryana, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Odisha, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Andhra Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.
Among all the assembly elections, the Jammu and Kashmir polls were historic as they marked the first elections held after the abrogation of Article 370.
US Elections
The US elections dominated global headlines, with Donald J. Trump, the former president and now likely future president, making an improbable political comeback by defeating Vice President Kamala Harris.
India-china Border Issue
In 2024, after four years, there was some progress in the long-standing India-China border dispute. An agreement reached on October 21 focused on patrolling arrangements along the contested Himalayan border, especially the Line of Actual Control (LAC), to reduce tensions that began in 2020.

Opposition leaders jailed
Major political turmoil erupted in 2024 following the arrests of two chief ministers. Then-Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 21, in connection with a money laundering probe related to the Delhi excise policy. Earlier, on January 31, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren was also arrested in an alleged money laundering case. Currently, both leaders have been granted bail.
Doctor's Protest
The horrific rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata was one of the most distressing incidents that shocked the nation. The case came to light on August 9, prompting doctors across the country to protest, demanding justice for the victim. This tragic event raised serious concerns about the safety of women and healthcare professionals in the country.
