Several states and UTs have put strict restrictions, or call it a semi-lockdown, to check the spread of COVID-19. The measures come amid the rising coronavirus cases across India as the country on Wednesday registered 1,15,736 new infections, its biggest one-day rise in cases since the COVID-19 outbreak.

 

India's total tally has now increased to 1.28 crore, of which, 8,43,473 are active cases in India. According to the Centre, eight states namely Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh and Punjab have shown a steep rise in the COVID-19 daily new cases.

Maharashtra, the worst-COVID-19-hit state in India, is witnessing a second wave of coronavirus. The authorities have put severe restrictions that will remain in place till April 30 and are a part of 'Break the Chain Restrictions'. Weekend lockdowns will come into force and Section 144 will be imposed all through the day. Citizens cannot leave their home without a valid reason between 8 pm and 7 am and only essential services are excluded from these curfew rules.

 

All shops except grocery, medicines, vegetables and those selling essential items will stay shut, along with malls, market places and gyms.

 

Theatres, multiplexes, video parlours, pubs, swimming pools, sports complexes, auditoriums, waterparks have also been shut down completely. Several other restrictions have also been put in the state

Night curfew in Delhi

Delhi has also been hit by the recent wave of COVID-19, which has led to the Arvind Kejriwal-led government deciding to impose a night curfew to curb the spread of the virus. The night curfew (10 pm to 5 am) will remain in the national capital till April 30.

 

Those exempted from the night curfew include pregnant women, patients, those travelling to and from airports, railway stations, state bus terminus on showing tickets, officials related to the functioning of offices of diplomats, and those holding any constitutional post on the production of valid identity card.

 

Central and Delhi government officials involved in emergency services such as health and family welfare and all related medical establishments, police, prisons, home guards, civil defence, fire and emergency services are also exempted.

 

Officials of district administration, pay and accounts office, electricity, water and sanitation, public transport, disaster management and related services, NIC, NCC and municipal services, and all other essential services will also be exempted from the night curfew on the production of a valid identity card.

 

People travelling during curfew hours for COVID-19 vaccination will require a soft or hard copy of an e-pass which can be obtained from www.delhi.gov.in.

Gujarat has also announced a night curfew in 20 cities and eight metros in the state. As per the orders issued by Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, a curfew from 8 pm to 6 am will be in force till April 30, in which, the major events have also been postponed for the given time period.

 

Government offices will remain closed on all remaining Saturdays of April. Also, a gathering of not more than 100 people will be allowed at weddings.

Jharkhand has also tightened its COVID-19 restrictions to prevent coronavirus from spreading. All shops, restaurants, clubs shall not function after 8 pm till April 30. However, take-home/ home delivery is permitted.

 

More than 5 persons shall not congregate at public places, whereas, all schools have also been shut. All gymnasium and swimming pools will be closed, along with parks. All Sports events, fairs and exhibitions have also been banned.

Amid rising COVID-19 cases, the Chandigarh administration has decided to impose a curfew from Wednesday from 10 pm to 5 am. No gatherings, parties and non-essential activities will be allowed during the period, whereas, the restaurants will also be required to shut down by 10 pm

Although there is no official confirmation on this yet, but Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has said only a limited number of people should get involved in public events. He has also asked officials to keep the arrangement of the quarantine centres ready at the block level. 

Nitish Kumar held a high-level review meeting on the COVID-19 situation on Tuesday and directed officials to conduct coronavirus tests of all the frontline and health care workers and also of their relatives who come in contact with them.

The Allahabad High Court has instructed the Uttar Pradesh government to consider a night curfew situation as the state is witnessing a surge in COVID-19 cases.

 

The court has asked the government to consider vaccination and night curfew of all people.

Madhya Pradesh had also recently imposed lockdown in a few districts in the wake of a surge in COVID-19 cases. 

However, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has said that limited lockdown can be enforced on Sunday or one more day, depending on the situation.
