North Korea will reopen its borders to international tourists in December 2024, beginning with the northeastern city of Samjiyon and potentially extending to other parts of the country.

This marks the first significant reopening since 2020, following years of strict COVID-19 border controls that limited international travel to the country.

Beijing-based Koryo Tours and KTG Tours have confirmed the resumption of tourism. Koryo Tours indicated that itineraries and dates will be confirmed in the coming weeks.

International flights to and from North Korea resumed last year. A small group of Russian tourists visited North Korea in February, and foreign officials, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, have visited recently.

North Korea has been developing Samjiyon as a 'socialist utopia,' featuring new apartments, hotels, a ski resort, and various facilities. Recent changes in leadership were made to address issues with this project.
