Weather update: Several parts of India to experience heatwave, IMD sounds 'yellow alert' for Delhi - In pics

On Wednesday, heat wave conditions prevailed in some parts of Gangetic West Bengal and in isolated pockets over Bihar, western Rajasthan, Odisha, Vidarbha and Saurashtra Kutch. Across these states, maximum temperatures ranged between 43 degrees Celsius and 45.6 degrees Celsius (at Rajgarh in Madhya Pradesh, followed by 45.5 degrees Celsius at Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh), IMD data showed.

Delhi saw a jump of two to three degrees Celsius in the maximum temperature at most places on Wednesday. "Heatwave conditions over East, Central and Northwest India during next five days," IMD said. "Yellow alert in Delhi for the heatwave. There is a possibility of a dust storm in North India on April 29. The temperature will drop from 1st-2nd May. The eastern region will not see heatwave conditions from April 30," IMD official said.

On Wednesday, Maharashtra’s Brahmpuri in Chandrapur district recorded a maximum temperature of 45.1 degrees Celsius which was the highest in Maharashtra during the day, said an IMD official. Several other cities in eastern part of the state too recorded temperatures above 40 degrees.

The winter capital Jammu recorded its hottest day of the season so far as the mercury touched 40 degrees Celsius, officials said, as protest against power cuts and water crisis continued in different parts of the Union Territory.

Odisha sweltered in the blazing sun as a searing heatwave engulfed several parts of the state for the third successive day and the maximum temperature breached the 40 degrees Celsius-mark in 24 places, IMD said. As per the Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre, the mercury shot up to 43 degrees Celsius or more in 11 weather stations, including Subarnapur town where it was 44.5 degrees Celsius, the highest of the season.

West Bengal would continue to reel under heat wave conditions over the next three days, IMD stated on Wednesday, adding that some respite could be in store from May 1 owing to moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal. Kolkata residents had been experiencing uncomfortable weather over the past few days owing to sweltering heat and high humidity.
