Wearing Shorts On Flight? You Are Making A BIG Mistake, Explains Flight Attendant

When it comes to dressing for a flight, comfort often tops the priority list, but some choices might not be as practical—or hygienic—as they seem. According to flight attendants, wearing shorts on a flight could be a big mistake for travelers.

While shorts may seem ideal for staying cool, they expose more skin to potentially germ-laden surfaces on seats and armrests, increasing the risk of contact with dirt, bacteria, and allergens. Beyond hygiene, there are also concerns about comfort and safety, making it essential to rethink your travel wardrobe for a healthier and more pleasant journey.

Experienced flight attendant Tommy Cimato shared travel tips on TikTok, including an unusual suggestion: avoid wearing shorts on flights.

He explained that airplane seats might not always be clean, saying, “If you wear pants, you reduce the risk of germs contacting your skin." With frequent daily flights, seats are exposed to various conditions, so wearing longer clothing minimizes germ exposure.

Germs are not limited to seats; windows, trays, and armrests can also harbor bacteria. Cimato warned, “Leaning against the window poses a similar risk—you don’t know how many people or children have touched or wiped their hands on it."

He also advised against touching the toilet flush button with bare hands, calling it “super unsanitary” and recommending the use of a napkin or tissue instead.

Airplane cabins, with humidity levels between 10% and 20%, create a dry environment that increases water loss from the skin and lungs. Cimato suggested drinking about 16 ounces of water per flight to stay hydrated.

While airlines follow hygiene procedures, quick turnarounds may lead to overlooked cleaning. Passengers can help by disposing of trash, sanitizing hands, and being mindful of hygiene, contributing to a safer and cleaner travel experience for everyone.
