Indian musical maestro and santoor player from Jammu, Padma Vibhushan Pandit Shivkumar Sharma breathed his last on Tuesday following a heart attack in a Mumbai hospital.

Santoor maestro Pandit Shivkumar Sharma passed away on Tuesday (May 10) at the age of 84, leaving behind a rich legacy. The Padma Vibhushan recipient is being cremated with full state honour today. Maharashtra CMO office in a statement said, "Pt Shiv Kumar Sharma will be cremated with state honours. The chief minister has given the order in this regard”.

The late legendary santoor player is credited for making santoor popular. He has been bestowed with the highest honours including honorary citizenship of the city of Baltimore, USA, in 1985, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1986, and the Padma Shri in 1991, and the Padma Vibhushan in 2001 respectively.

Born to a musician mother Uma Dutt Sharma in Jammu, Pandit Shivkumar Sharma began his musical journey quite early. He started learning santoor at 13 and gave his first public performance in Mumbai in 1955 at 17, making Santoor feature on a global map no sooner. His son Rahul Sharma is also a santoor player now.
