Blobfish inhabit the deep waters of Australia and New Zealand, typically found at depths between 2,000 and 4,000 feet below sea level. They live in extreme pressure conditions, which contribute to their unique body structure.

The blobfish has a delicate, soft skeleton with very few muscles. Its body is designed to withstand the high pressure of deep ocean environments, making its skeleton and structure different from typical fish.

When blobfish are taken out of their deep-sea habitat, the decrease in water pressure causes their appearance to change. Outside the water, their jelly-like body sags, and their nose enlarges, contributing to their odd, ‘ugly’ appearance.
