Islamabad: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani will visit Iran next week to hold talks with the top leadership of the country and to discuss the regional situation.

"The current visit of Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi to Pakistan and his meetings with Pakistani leaders will provide important substantive inputs for the visit by Prime Minister Gilani to Iran," Foreign Office spokesperson Tehmina Janjua told a weekly news briefing today. Gilani, who will visit Iran during September 11-13, will hold detailed discussions with the Iranian leadership on strengthening bilateral relations and exchange views on the regional situation, she said.

"Pakistan`s foreign policy priority is to have the best relations with our neighbours," she said. As part of a policy of focused regional outreach, President Asif Ali Zardari visited Urumqi and Tajikistan while Prime Minister Gilani visited Kazakhstan over the past fortnight, Janjua said.

Salehi is currently in Islamabad for a meeting of the Pakistan-Iran Joint Economic Commission.

Finance Minister Abdul Hafeez Shaikh is representing Pakistan in the meet.
Both sides are giving high priority to enhancing transport and communication links, important energy projects, mutually beneficial cooperation and trade, including preferential tariff arrangements, Janjua said.
