`India needs to build relations with neighbours`
Union Home Minister P Chidambaram on Wednesday stressed that building trustworthy relationship with neigbouring countries is important for India as it is in the troubled geographical location.

New Delhi: Union Home Minister P Chidambaram on Wednesday stressed that building trustworthy relationship with neigbouring states is important for India as it is in the troubled geographical location.
To drive his point home, the Home Minister cited Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh’s recent visit to Bangladesh, which was aimed at strengthening the bilateral ties with that country.
“Never in 40 years were India and Bangladesh so assured in forging relationships,” Chidambaram said. Calling for the need to work closely and enhancing cooperation with neighbouring nations, Chidambaram said that it will help in countering multiple security challenges.
“In no other time has India faced multiple security challenges, but we can tackle these challenges if we work closely,” Chidambaram.
The Home Minister’s statement holds significance in the wake of a similar statement made by Bangladesh Premier Sheikh Hasina, who had expressed optimism that her country will be able to work out the Teesta water sharing agreement with India. India and Bangladesh had inked various pacts during Singh`s visit early this month but could not sign a deal on the Teesta water sharing.
Hasina said she was not disappointed that the two sides could not sign the Teesta water sharing deal during the visit.
