Prohibitory orders clamped in Muzaffarpur
Locals blocked NH 28 and set on fire three vehicles in protest against the arrest of Ajay Shankar Sharma.
Muzaffarpur: Prohibitory orders were clamped in Bihar`s Muzaffarpur town after a violent protest by locals on Friday against the arrest of a social worker on hunger strike since October 02 demanding power supply from Kanti thermal power plant to villages.
Locals blocked NH 28 and set on fire three vehicles, including a fire tender, in protest against the arrest of Ajay Shankar Sharma and later hospitalisation by police last night following deterioration of his health, official sources said. Sharma, who heads an apolitical outfit, had launched an indefinite hunger strike outside the gates of NTPC`s Kanti thermal power on October 02 demanding power supply from it to the villages lying within a radius of five kms.
As the protest threatened to get out of control, the police used water cannon to disperse the protesters but to no avail, the sources said. District Magistrate Santosh Kumar Mal clamped the prohibitory orders in Muzaffarpur town banning assembly of a large number of people in view of the prevailing tension, the sources said.
