Guwahati: The BJP on Thursday accused Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi of giving away Assam`s land to Bangladesh in the land swap deal, "which concerned the nation`s sovereignty."
Both the Central and Assam governments "hoodwinked" the poor religious minority people living in the Boroibari area of Dhubri in the Indo-Bangladesh land swap deal, BJP national spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy told reporters here after visiting the area in Dhubri district. "Gogoi has said not an inch of Assam`s land has been given. He has not verified the records with the local people there. We personally verified the land deeds of the people there and discount Gogoi`s claim. This is unacceptable to the BJP," Rudy asserted.
"An area of 559 bigha (8049600 sq ft) has been given away at Boroibari on the Indo-Bangladesh border. Local people there showed us their property documents of 40-50 years showing their right over the land. Now that land has been given away to Bangladesh," the BJP leader claimed displaying copies of the land deeds to the media.
In view of the Prime Minister signing the (land swap) agreement on September 6 two days before Parliament was to adjourn sine die, Rudy said that no agreement should be signed without the consent of the concerned people of the place and leaders of the political parties should be consulted before signing such an agreement. "The practice is that various political parties, Assembly and Parliament are consulted before deciding on the boundary. It concerns the sovereignty of the nation," he said.
