UN suspends Syria peace mission
In the wake of increasing violence, the United Nations on Saturday decided to suspend its peace mission in Syria.

Syria: In the wake of increasing violence, the United Nations on Saturday decided to suspend its peace mission in Syria. However, the UN remains committed to ending the violence, officials said.
The decision was taken after increased incidents of violence prevented observers` ability to do their work, said officials. “We are committed to putting an end to the violence. However, the observers would cease patrols and stay in their current locations. This suspension will be reviewed on a daily basis. Operations will resume when we see the situation fit for us to carry out our mandated activities,” said Major Gen Robert Mood, head of UN Stabilisation Mission in Syria (UNSMIS). The violence has intensified in the last 10 days. As per reports, at least 60 people were killed in the country over the past few days. Meanwhile, the opposition Syrian National Council has warned of a looming massacre in Homs which it says is besieged by 30,000 troops and pro-regime militiamen. “The lack of willingness by the parties to seek a peaceful transition, and the push towards advancing military positions is increasing the losses on both sides: innocent civilians, men, women and children are being killed every day. It is also posing a significant risk to our observers," Mood said.
