Islamabad: Farooq H Naek, a close aide of President Asif Ali Zardari, was on Wednesday appointed as Pakistan`s new Law Minister, replacing Maula Bux Chandio.
Naek, who accompanied Zardari to India this Sunday, had recently stepped down as Chairman of the Senate or upper house of Parliament. He had also done a stint as the Law Minister in 2008 before being made Chairman of the Senate.
President Zardari administered the oath of office to Naek during a ceremony at the presidency.
Chandio is expected to be given another portfolio soon. In a separate development, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani today conferred the status of federal minister on Sherry Rehman, currently Pakistan`s Ambassador to the US.
The Cabinet Division issued a notification in this regard. Rehman, a former Information Minister, was appointed Pakistan`s envoy to the US in November last year.
She was a member of the National Assembly or lower house of Parliament before the appointment. PTI
