New Delhi: With an aim to clamp down on financial terrorism, Government is likely to amend the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) to take effective action against individuals and entities that provide funds to terror groups in the country.
"The changes in the UAPA are being deliberated presently. One of them pertains to certain inclusions in the Act based on the recommendations of the global body-- the Financial Action Task Force," Secretary (Internal Security) U K Bansal said here. "Other things are also being deliberated but we have to keep in mind that something which is incorporated in the Act now does not hamper the earlier cases being probed done by the National Investigation Agency (NIA)," Bansal said but refused to elaborate on the proposed changes.
India had become the member of the global anti-terror financing body FATF last year in order to strengthen its fight against blackmoney and illegal funds stashed abroad. FATF sets global standards in this regard for its member countries. The government has initiated a host of steps for unearthing illicit funds which include strengthening the Income Tax department and the Enforcement Directorate and setting up a high-level committee under the chairmanship of the CBDT Chairman to suggest measures to curb the menace.
