Zeenext Bureau Mysore, Aug 24: Bail petitions of the 51 alleged associates of forest brigand Veerappan, lodged in Mysore jail for the past seven years, will be heard by District and Sessions Judge Rajendra Prasad on Aug 28.
In a move expected to have far reaching consequences in ensuring the safe release of actor Rajkumar from the hands of Veerappan, defence counsel Gangadharan, Subbukrishna, Vincent John and Venugopal, filed the petitions on Thursday on behalf of the 51 accused. Judge Rajendra Prasad also admitted the plea for the relaxation of conditions in the case of six other accused, who are already out on bail. Counsel Vincent John submitted that the six may be absolved of the routine of presenting themselves before the M.M.Hills and Ramapura police stations periodically.
Special Public Prosecutor Ashwini Kumar Joshi submitted that the court may pass orders as it may deem fit, as in the changed circumstances, the prosecution did not have any basis to file objections. In another development, the judge also said there was no need for the 51 accused to appear personally before him on Aug 28. He ordered that they present themselves before the court on Sept. 8, for the hearing of cases now transferred to the sessions court, in the wake of the withdrawal of TADA charges against them. Counsel Vincent John felt the accused could be released on an execution of self-bond without surety on Aug 28.
Top ranking police officers, including Inspector-General (southern range) Srivastava and DCP Shiva Prasad were present in the court.
