Los Angeles: "Marvel's Agents of SHIELD" Patton Oswalt has shown supported for Patton Oswalt has shown his support for the newly appointed "Daily Show" host Trevor Noah amid backlash over the correspondent's past jokes.

Noah, who has been chosen to replace Jon Stewart as "The Daily Show" host, landed in hot water as people took issue with his offensive jokes that he made before he joined the Comedy Central series as a correspondent in late 2014.

Oswalt posted 53 tweets to explain how comedians could come under fire for jokes that were considered offensive. "Q: Why did the man* throw* butter* out of the window*? A: He wanted to see* butter fly*!" Oswalt began his rant with a joke.

He then deconstructed the joke, writing, "'Man' in my previous Tweet should not be construed as privileged, misogynist or anti-trans. Nor should there be ANY assumption of said man's race or religion. It could be an African American man, Asian, or any one of the vast multi-cultural mosaic which make up the world we live in today."

He concluded after a series of other tweets jokes should always entertain. "A simple series of clarifying post-joke Tweets like the ones I just sent out will insure EVERYONE a gentle, comforting chuckle," he posted. The actor gave a shout out to Noah, "Welcome to comedy in 2015, @Trevornoah!" before adding, "Also, the 'come' part of 'welcome' shouldn't be construed in a 'faggy' way."

Noah was criticised for some jokes he made on a Comedy Central series as a correspondent in late 2014. Responding to the backlash, he tweeted on Tuesday, "To reduce my views to a handful of jokes that didn't land is not a true reflection of my character, nor my evolution as a comedian."
