Orissa Telecom circle of BSNL has plans to the provide telephone connections to all the 22,000 uncovered villages in the state by December end, according to its chief general manager, P C Sahu. More than 10,000 village public telephones would be provided in uncovered villages by March, Sahu told a press conference in Bhubaneswar.
About 4000 villages of the state located in the hilly terrain would get satellite telephones by the end of 2002, he said.
Sahu said, besides Reliance Telecom, which is providing mobile telephone facility in the state, BSNL and two other companies were likely to launch their service in Orissa soon. BSNL planned to provide 50,000 mobile connections in the state during the next year. All the district headquarters and along the national and state highways would be covered under the project, he said.
Sahu said, 3000 km of optical fibre cable route would be provided in the state during the current financial year. Intelligent network service had already been provided at Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Sambalpur and Berhampur and work was on to provide the service in all revenue district headquarters by of this year, he said.
At present the state has 1010 telephone exchanges with a total capacity of 7.2 lakh lines.
